EnergyStrip CSM is a Control Strip Module that lets you view and adjust the power conservation settings for your Macintosh.
It is designed to replace the PowerBook control panel (on PowerBooks) and the Energy Saver control panel (on PCI-based Power Macintoshes).
Compatibility
The EnergyStrip CSM will work on any 68LC040- or PPC-based PowerBook. When this manual was prepared, this included:
• PowerBook Duo 2300c
• PowerBook 190 series
• PowerBook 5300 series
• PowerBook 500 series
• PowerBook 2400/3400/G3
It will also work on any PCI-based Power Macintosh that supports the Energy Saver features. This includes:
• Performa 5400 series
• Performa 6400 series
• Power Macintosh 7200 series
• Power Macintosh 7500 series
• Power Macintosh 7600 series
• Power Macintosh 8500 series
• Power Macintosh 9500 series
• PCI-based Power Macintosh Clones (Power Computing, UMAX ,etc.)
NOTE: One user reported that use of the EnergyStrip CSM switched his internal modem settings from "Internal" to "Compatible". Since I don't have one of these older PowerBooks, I have been unable to isolate or determine the cause of the problem.
Installing the EnergyStrip CSM - PowerBooks
If you are using Mac OS 8.5 or earlier, you must drag the Control Strip Module to the Control Strip folder inside your System folder. If you are using Mac OS 8.6 or later, the Mac OS will recognize the Control Strip - merely drag it to your System Folder, and the Mac OS will move it automatically for you.
With Mac OS 8.5 or earlier:
1) Open your System folder.
2) Copy the Control Strip Module to the Control Strip Folder in your System folder.
3) Restart your computer.
You will also need to disable the PowerBook control panel:
1) Disable the PowerBook control panel either using the Extensions Manager, or by dragging the PowerBook control panel out of the Control Panels folder.
2) Restart your PowerBook.

Once you've installed the EnergyStrip CSM, you can configure it to match your personal preferences.

Once you've installed the EnergyStrip CSM, you can configure it to match your personal preferences.
 
Main menu
The main menu lets you control the appearance of the EnergyStrip CSM. You can select which items are to be displayed, and whether your settings will have any effect.
 
Registration status
Indicates whether or not you've registered your copy.
Show cycling icon
(Available on PowerBooks only) Toggles display of cycling icon.
Show disk status icon
Toggles display of hard disk icon, which indicates whether or not the hard drive is spinning.
Show dimming clock
Toggles display of clock icon for screen dimming settings.
Show spindown clock
Toggles display of clock icon for drive spindown settings.
Show sleep clock
Toggles display of clock icon for system sleep settings.
Use 1/4 hour display for short times
If enabled, it uses a different clock format (a 1/4 hour wedge) to display any settings that are under fifteen minutes. Otherwise, the standard round clock display is used.
Enable adjustments
If enabled, the EnergyStrip CSM will adjust the power conservation settings. Otherwise, any changes you make to the settings through the EnergyStrip CSM won't have any effect.
Processor Cycling menu
 
(Available on PowerBooks only) When you click on the cycling icon, the processor cycling menu appears.
This menu lets you enable processor cycling when on AC or battery power. Processor cycling helps to conserve battery power and reduce heat generation when the PowerBook is idle.
Drive spindown menu
When you click on the hard drive icon, the drive spindown menu appears.
This menu has a single option, which will let you spin down the hard drive if it's currently spinning.
Dim/Spindown/Sleep settings
 
When you click on any of the "clock" icons, a large popup menu appears similar to the one above. You can adjust the time periods for these settings by selecting the appropriate time off the menu.
PowerBook users have the option to select different times for AC and battery.
